Head west from the San Jose International airport on the Pan American Highway towards Punteranas. This highway travels north and west toward the Guanacaste Province and it winds through the mountains for quite a while, eventually flattening out and straightening into a more northerly course. Continue past the exit for Punteranas towards Liberia. About 45 minutes later look for the left exit to the new Tempisque Bridge, also known as the "Puente de Amistad". You will go left but the signs will be on you right. About 20 minutes later you will reach the new bridge. Continue on for 20 more minutes to stop sign. Turn right, following the signs to Nicoya. This is the last "large" town before Nosara. (Good place to gas up, get some provisions and food!)
Drive right through Nicoya and follow signs to Samara and Garza. After a while you will come to a T in the road with a stop sign. Turn right and follow this road towards Samara. About 30 minutes later you will climb a hill with a large gas station on your left, and there is a hardware store and "soda" snack shop. Just past the gas station the road continues left to Samara, with a gravel road that forks off to the right. Take the gravel road to the right!
From this point on the road is gravel with bumps, hills, turns, people and animals. It is approximately 25 KM, but takes about 1-1 1/2 hours to reach Nosara. Be careful and watchful and keep it slow. You will pass through many small towns and villages. At the village of Barco Quebrada you will come to a T in the road. Turn right towards Garza and Nosara. You will pass through the small fishing village of Garza, with the bay on your left. This is where many of the fishing charter boats are based. About 10 minutes later you will pass through the small town of Esperenza. Soon after you will pass by the Nosara Yoga Institute on your left. This is the land mark that you are near Nosara.
You will continue on to Playa Pelada which is just north of Playa Guiones. |
